Sod Care Guide
Install Immediately
Install your sod as soon as possible after delivery. Sod is perishable and can quickly become damaged if left uninstalled, especially in warm conditions where heat buildup can harm the turf.
After installation, begin deep watering immediately. Saturate the soil 3–4 inches deep—enough that it feels soft or slightly soggy when walked on. The most successful installations are completed right after delivery.
Pest Prevention
You may treat your sod for insects as soon as 24 hours after installation to help prevent infestations. Regularly inspect your lawn—especially during warmer months—and treat as needed.
First Two Weeks After Installation
- Proper watering is critical for root establishment.
- Keep the sod and underlying soil consistently moist throughout the day.
- Water daily in the morning and early afternoon until roots begin to establish (typically the first 10 days).
- Recommended watering times:
Summer: 6–7 AM and 2–4 PM
Fall/Winter: Ensure the final watering is completed before sunset so the sod can dry slightly overnight. - If installing on a hot day, lightly water the soil before laying sod.
- Maintain a balance—thorough watering is essential, but allow time for the sod to partially dry between watering cycles.
- Minimize foot traffic until after the first mowing (generally around 30 days).
- As roots begin to establish, reduce watering frequency to once per day to help firm the soil.
- First mowing should occur about 30 days after installation (longer in winter).
- Always mow high and never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
Three to Four Weeks After Installation
- Adjust your irrigation schedule:
Gradually reduce watering frequency
Increase watering duration per session - Deep, less frequent watering encourages deeper root growth.
- You can gently tug on the sod to check if roots are establishing.
- Apply fertilizer after one month to promote continued growth and establishment.
Additional Tips
Using a rain gauge can help ensure your sod is receiving adequate water during the rooting process.
