Laying Guide
Guide to Properly Laying Sod
Step-by-Step Installation
- Prepare the Ground
Till the top layer of soil and remove any existing grass, weeds, or deep roots. Level the area to eliminate any low spots or uneven sections.
- Moisten & Prep the Soil
Lightly dampen the soil before installation. If desired, apply a New Lawn Starter fertilizer to promote healthy root development.
- Lay the Sod
Begin along the longest straight edge of the area. Lay sod in straight rows, ensuring each piece is placed flat with full soil contact (dirt-to-dirt). Butt edges tightly together without leaving gaps, and smooth out any bumps as you go.
- Trim as Needed
Cut sod pieces to fit around edges, walkways, irrigation heads, and other irregular areas where full pieces won’t fit.
- Water Immediately
Thoroughly water the newly installed sod right after installation. Continue with proper watering and care for the first two weeks to ensure successful rooting.
Bonus Tips
- Do not overlap sod pieces—edges should be tightly fitted with all roots in direct contact with the soil.
- Smooth out any footprints or indentations before and during installation.
- Minimize foot traffic on freshly laid sod to encourage proper root establishment.
- Sod is a living product with a limited lifespan after harvest—install it as soon as possible for best results.
- You can apply an insect treatment 24 hours after installation to help prevent damage. Continue to monitor for pests, especially during warmer months.
